Their boast may well be justified. Among many other things, they host a FAQ for Usenet newsgroup alt.atheism, and the complete works of US agnostic Robert Ingersoll (1833-1899), whose intelligent and entertaining lectures are still worth reading today.

The "Boston Globe" wrote them up Tues 27 Oct 98 ("Metro" section, p. 1). You can retrieve the article from the "Globe"s archive with a search against "MIT atheists," but you might have to pay about $3 to download the actual article.

The American Humanist Association has a Boston chapter.

CSICOP (Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims Of the Paranormal) puts out the quarterly "Skeptical Inquirer."

A local affiliate, the New England Skeptical Society (NESS), is based mainly in Connecticut.

STATS (Statistical Assessment Service) helps journalists evaluate the science (if any) behind media scares and scams. Although their charter is ideologically neutral, some environmental activists have found them annoying. Look for their annual "Dubious data awards."

The "Cult Awareness Network" was bankrupted and captured by endless lawsuits from Scientologists. (Even the numerous failed lawsuits by those with "deep pockets" impoverished their target with heavy legal expenses. The final blow was a successful lawsuit, holding CAN partially responsible for an unsuccessful "deprogramming" of a Scientologist. Even before that, "deprogramming" had lost its attraction to cult opponents. Cult adherents will normally escape cults in their own good time, if physically able to.).

Religious Ultras and their foes

Neal Horsley of the "Creator's Rights Party" maintains the Christian Gallery website. It offers links to other ultras, especially anti-abortionists.
"Christian Gallery"s most egregious link was the "Nuremberg Files Project," a hit-list of abortion doctors and their families. It included all the personal information needed (eg photos, addresses, car license numbers, names of other family members, etc., etc.) for the faithful to stalk and murder doctors and family members. In late January 1999, they were hit with a massive $107 million verdict by a jury in Oregon, and on 5 Feb 99, their ISP Mindspring took down their site. (They are looking for a new ISP).
I have reposted 3 pages from this site (sanitized of information that could track victims), so that readers can judge for themselves.

"Christian Reconstructionists" (hereafter CRs) would replace the Bill of Rights with the Old Testament, including stoning of social offenders. They sometimes use anti-government rhetoric to ingratiate themselves with US libertarian groups, while keeping a discreet silence about their planned replacement for the US Constitution.

Some People We Love to Hate

Dr. Laura -- Some of what she says on her nationally-syndicated radio call-in advice show makes sense (eg disparaging "repressed memory"). Nevertheless, her increasing subservience to the Religious Right, and her hypocrisy, eg as a working mother who condemns all other working mothers, have generated legions of non-fans.
